Prior to 1942, there were few toxins to which we were exposed. The toxic chemicals in products families use everyday have created a serious problem that is impacting their health, their quality of life and their very future. We are now the first generation of people ever exposed to such an unprecedented number of chemicals on a daily basis – there are now over 70,000 chemicals commercially produced in the U.S., and the number is increasing every day. What products in your home contain chemicals where only a few have been tested for safety? Very few!
The average person is exposed to over 300 chemicals before leaving the bathroom each morning. This exposure is from ingredients in soaps, shampoos, conditioners, body lotions, deodorants, toothpastes, perfumes, and the chlorine from a hot shower or bath. The point of contact for many of these chemicals and harmful synthetic ingredients is the skin – your body’s largest organ. It takes only a short time for those chemicals on your skin to get into your bloodstream. The result of using these chemicals is that people feel tired, experience foggy thinking, have increased inflammation and pain and even depression, all due to the toxicity of these ingredients. Our skin may serve as a protective organ, but it is not impenetrable. It can absorb lipids (oils) and other compounds. Most synthetic ingredients are made from petroleum (oils or other “natural” products) and when absorbed, they are often stored in fatty tissue and organs, including the brain.
What is The Risk Factor of Products That Are Not Toxic-free?
Many skin and personal care products contain carcinogens, fragrances, harmful preservatives, and toxic chemicals that can block the skin’s critical natural functions of absorbing oxygen and detoxifying the body. While these toxic ingredients may be present in miniscule amounts, some or all of these chemicals are absorbed through the skin into the fatty tissue and blood stream. Research has shown traces of these toxins are stored in the brain, liver, heart, and kidneys. The biggest problems occur when these ingredients are repeatedly applied over an extended period of time, which is the nature of personal skin care products. Some of the chemicals found in typical body care products are considered environmental hazards by the EPA—yet it’s perfectly legal for manufacturers to put them in their products, indirectly allowing you to put them in your body.
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 884 chemicals and synthetic ingredients commonly found in personal care and cosmetic products are toxic, 146 cause, 218 cause reproductive complications and 314 cause biological mutation. They are known to be irritants, allergens, or carcinogens. They are not prohibited (or even restricted) for use in personal and skin care in the United States, but the health concerns in other countries like Canada, the European Union, and Japan have caused these ingredients to be banned in these countries. A perfect example is the baby shampoo from Johnson & Johnson. “No More Tears” which contains two potent toxins, 1,4-dioxane (considered a likely carcinogen) and quaternium-15 (which leads to the production of formaldehyde). J & J says they are phasing out these two toxins over the next two years from their products in the United States and Canada, even though they were already removed from products in Europe in 2011.
Toxic synthetic chemicals in typical personal care products are causing long term chronic and fatal illnesses. Some of these include:

According to the Centers of Disease Control National Toxicology Program, 20 years of peer-reviewed studies have shown that synthetics in skin/hair care and household products cause birth defects, learning disorders, obesity, children’s cancers, sexual confusion. In addition, ingredients in shampoos, dyes, detergents and sunscreens may be mixing up our hormonal signals.
Read The Labels and Avoid Products That Contain These Ingredients
- Benzoyl Peroxide – hormone disruptor and suspected carcinogen found in acne products
- DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine) & TEA (Triethanolamine) – known carcinogen and may cause memory loss
- FD&C Color and Pigments (coal-tar) – These artificial colors are toxic
- Fragrances (synthetic) – these synthetic fragrances cause asthma, depression and weaken our immune systems
- PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) – also known as auto anti-freeze, these chemicals cause birth birth defects
- Parabens – These chemicals come in multiple forms and are suspected strong hormone disruptors
- Phthalates – often in sunscreens, shampoos and other ingredients on this list (i.e. PEG and Triclosan)
- Propylene and Butylene Glycol – Strong solvents
- Quaternium 15 (formaldehyde donor) – shown to be a potent allergen
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) – detergent solvents
- Sunscreen chemicals: oxybenzone, avobenzone, benzphenone, methoxycinnamate, etc. – these chemicals create free radicals, are considered pesticides and known to be carcinogenic
- Triclosan – antibacterial agent which acts as a hormone disruptor and causes water contamination (recently banned in Minnesota and Michigan)
- DMDM Hydantoin /Imidazolidnyl Urea /Duazikdinyl urea, 2-bromo-2nitropropane-1,3-diol – formaldehyde-cloning preservatives
